Our story

Mgunga Tanzania Safaris is a family business, and adventure runs right through it. Camping and exploring aren't just what we offer travellers, they're how we spend our own time, on two different continents, chasing the same pull toward the road less travelled.

For Peter, that goes back further than the business does.

He was born and raised in Tanzania, into a family that knew the bush long before he did — his grandparents and parents were from Tabora in the West, and lived much of their lives out in it. Growing up on their stories of wildlife shaped how he sees his own country: not as something you visit, but as something you belong alongside.

In 2004 he moved to the Kilimanjaro region to work with his brother JC, and spent years getting to know the Northern Circuit parks. Not just the routes, but the rhythms. He worked with two established safari companies in the region, trained at wildlife college, and met travellers from all over the world along the way. By 2014, he knew exactly what he wanted: to share his country properly, built from everything he'd learned.

In 2018 he opened a not-for-profit foundation, Tambua Njia Sahihi, to support local Tanzanian children to visit the parks and grow up loving and protecting them the same way he did.

Mgunga Tanzania Safaris became a registered company in 2023. We now work with local operators and agents around the world, but the heart of it hasn't moved — people, animals, a taste for adventure off the beaten track, and conservation, every day.
